Hunter S. Thompson, Biography

One could say that his father's death has affected his writing styles; unfortunately, Thompson does not talk about his father in any published article or book that he has been connected with. In the spring of 1956, Thompson and five friends were arrested in Danville, KY for vandalism and preceded to do $200 worth of damage to the jail (ejeanlive.com). In June, not much later that year, Thompson was arrested with two others for robbery. The other two arrested, Ralston Steenrod and Sam Stallings Jr. went free on the account that "they had pull". Unfortunately, Thompson was not as lucky, spending 30 days in jail, preventing him from graduating high school. He was released early on conditions that he enlist in the Air Force. (gonzo.org).
The Air Force allowed Thompson very interesting opportunities to say the least. In 1956, Thompson worked as a sports writer and later an editor for the Eglin Air Force Base Newsletter. This allowed him the opportunity to graduate and get his diploma through correspondence courses from the Air Force. He was later honorably discharged when his supervising officer found out Thompson was moonlighting for a civilian newspaper. It was later stated in an Eglin Air Force Memo that his actions in reaction to the honorable discharge were less than honorable. After receiving his separation papers, he was rumored to "have set out in the direction of the gate house at high speed in a muffler-less car with no brakes. An immediate search was begun for a Hunter S. Thompson." Englin Air Force Base Memo, (November 8, 1957)(gonzo.org).
Thompson decided to reside in New York for a couple of years. He bounced around the state about as fast as he went through jobs. He moved to New York City in 1958, working as a copyboy and "Caribbean Correspondent" for Time and attends Columbia University on a partial scholarship. Within a year he moves to the Catskill Mountains in upper New York.
