Death as a Result of Pride

Willy has pride in his family and himself, but does not want anyone to see they are human and make mistakes.
This is apparent in a flashback Willy has with Bernard. Bernard initiates a conversation with Willy about Biff's math work in an attempt to make him aware Biff's near failure in the class. Bernard wants Willy to understand that the school will not graduate him because he printed University of Virginia on his shoes. Willy responds overconfidently that Bernard does not know what he is talking about seeing as Biff has scholarships for football to many Universities that the school would not graduate him. Willy comes off with a, "Do you really think their going to do that" attitude (1190). Not wanting to see the truth in what Bernard is saying Willy does not even hint to Bernard that he is right about Biff needing help in math and that he will not graduate if he does not shape up. This time Willy hinders Biff's future in school to maintain his family's pride. His inactions lead to Biff not graduating. .
Yet Willy's pride hinders his judgment even when he is in need of help. Charley, Willy's neighbor, offered Willy a job working for him many times and every time Willy says that he has a job already. Charley has given Willy money to pay the bills ever since .
             page 3.
Willy started working on commission. After Willy was fired from his sales job he went over to meet Charley and ask him for some more money: Again Charley offers him a job, but Willy yet again says, "I've got a job" (1224). After losing his job Willy can not take a paying job because in his mind he is letting his pride down. This shows how Willy considers himself above others and even a job. This time he is hurting his family as well as himself by thinking that this job is lower than the one he had before. By thinking this he does not realize that he needs the money that Charley will pay him. All of this proves that he is not open to others opinions and advice.
