Society and Obesity

.
I know that this is true because every time I turn on my television I always see commercials advocating women to lose weight. It pretty much makes women feel that it is bad to be fat and all we have to worry about is our looks. And unfortunately this trend to be skinny is going to be hard to change. Instead of promoting the gym for health issues you only see the skinny women on the treadmills. I have not even seen an obese woman doing the new method of strength training called Pilates, instead they have the skinny girls showing the exercises. It is very sad that the media can make such a great deal of affect to women in our society. Due to all this negative attention towards fat women many people have decided to make this all change. Women have come forth to defend their rights as fat women, and have started organizations that have helped them overcome the hardship of being obese in America.
Women found their organization of hope when the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance was found in 1969. This Association gave obese women the strength to feel that someone was on their side. Their goal is to improve the quality of life for fat people {www.naafa.org}. They have 3 ways in which they improve the life of obese women advocacy, education and support. The Association uses their power to advocate by promoting equality for obese women. They have rallies and demonstrations to prohibit discrimination against fat people for example in the airline industry. Discrimination is a priority for the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance. .
They also educate their members on the right way to be fit and healthy. The organization states that fat can be beautiful and that going on a diet is not always the solution to a fat person's problems. They do tell their member to lose weight if they want to, but they want to make sure that health wise that is the right thing to do. However, their concern is not having their member lose weight because that is not always the best option.
