The Problem with Prostitution

There is also the problem with job segregation, "Women are less likely than men to fill socially rewarding, high paying jobs, 46 percent of all working women are employed in service and administrative support jobs such as secretaries, waitresses and health aids. In the United States and Canada, the extent of job segregation in the lowest-paying occupations is increasing" "(Pg. 75). If women are not given the opportunity to have a high paying job and forced to do the "leftovers"" they have little chance to be independent. Poverty is also a relevant issue. "In 1989, one out of five families were headed by women. One-third of such women-headed families lived below the poverty line, which was $13, 359 for a family of four in 1990. In the United States, fathers currently owe mothers 24 billion dollars in unpaid child support"" (Pg. 75). It is no surprise that women who are independent are in poverty. How are they expected to earn money if they have children to care for and receive no child support from the father? Furthermore, there is an unequal division of labor in the family. "Within the family, women spend disproportionate amounts of time on housework and rearing children. According to one recent study, wives employed full-time outside the home do 70 percent of the housework; full-time housewives do 83 percent. The unequal family division of labor is itself caused by and causes labor market inequality; given the lower wages of working women, it is more costly for men to participate in household labor"" (Pg. 75-76). Since women already make less money than men and are forced to take care of the household labor, it gives women an even lesser chance of earning income. One can clearly see the negative economic factors imposed upon women, which unfortunately leads many women into prostitution. When a woman has limited options, prostitution is an easy way to make money since men are willing to pay to satisfy their sexual desires.
