Alcoholism and Recovery

There I attended meetings of Alcoholic Anonymous in order to learn more about my disease. I hoped to find a cure but sadly learned there is no such cure. After several meetings I did learn that the one treatment plan that showed a bit of promise was a regimen of attending meetings, talking to others who shared my disease, and of course abstaining from alcohol. .
In order for me to be free from active alcoholism and the problems associated with it I needed to learn how to maintain my sobriety. Alcoholism never goes away. It is an incurable, often fatal disease that can only be managed and maintained. It can be arrested at some point however and recovery is then possible. This maintenance comes through a twelve step recovery program that was developed through the experiences and learning of other alcoholics.
I attended the meetings and paid attention. I began to gather and collect information from others about our shared problem. I started to see the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel. I was enthused about the program. I was also rejuvenated about the prospect of being able to live a somewhat normal life free from active addiction. All I .
was required to do was what was suggested to me by the program. .
             2. REFLECTIVE OBSERVATIONS.
When I reflect back to the beginning of my drinking days I was unaware of the hold that alcohol was beginning to have on me. Weekend drinking with friends turned into solo nightly events. Drinking for fun was replaced by drinking to coping and avoidance. For me it was a slow gradual progression that culminated in the eventual disease of alcoholism.
I now have a greater understanding of the patterns of alcoholism and the alcoholic. I am better able to diagnose any potential set backs that may be heading my way. I was determined to rid myself of the negative consequences of my disease so I learned as much as I could handle about my problem and how to effectively diagnose it.
