Sale of the Madonna of the Pinks'

An auction house in London determined that the National Gallery would need to raise £29 million.
             The National Gallery has received a great deal of support in this endeavor. Hundreds of donations have been sent to help raise money. A £20 million grant was applied for, as well. The grant is crucial to raising enough money since the National Gallery believes it can raise the difference through private donations and its own resources. Without strong outside support from the public and private donations, it would be doubtful that the painting would remain in the United Kingdom. The Director for the National Gallery considers loosing the painting a disaster for both the country and National Gallery since the painting has hung there for the past eleven years. If the Raphael painting is sold abroad, the money raised would be used to save other major art works. To earn more money from donations, the National Gallery can reclaim the tax on gifts received. Reclaiming this tax increases every donation by almost a third.
             The Reviewing Committee on the Export of Works of Art believes that every effort should be made to raise enough money to purchase The Madonna of the Pinks' and recommended that a seven month block be put in place to keep the painting from being sold abroad. The painting is highly regarded among other privately collected works in the United Kingdom. To sell the painting abroad, the Duke of Northumberland needs an export license. If the license is to be refused, the money to buy the painting must be raised. The Northumberland estate trustees are selling the painting to help with preservation and maintenance costs for such things as the Alnwick Castle and the private art collection of Northumberland, which is displayed at Alnwick Castle. Raising the money through agricultural means is no longer enough to maintain the estate, so the money raised from the painting will help defer the costs.
