In the Consolation of Philosophy, Boethius tries to find solutions to why evil exists. What he says that he does not understand is how can evil exist in a world that is governed by the most powerful and supreme good, God? Another question that he asks is: How can evil go unpunished? Philosophy simply explains that the good are powerful and the evil are weak. Philosophy says that evil is always punished and good is always rewarded.
The questions that Boethius asks about, I also wonder about myself. In the world today, it seems that evil is always prevailing over good. There is always so many evil things happening and they always seem to overtake the good. It gets worse everyday. Every time I turn on the television or look in the newspaper, there is always something bad to hear or read about. You see and hear more bad things than good things. Just the other day, I heard that a man had been beaten to death by the police and someone had been robbed and killed in their own home. Many of the times when these things happen, they go unresolved and evil escapes without any kind of punishment. So, I can understand what Boethius was saying about evil going unpunished. It does seem that evil is winning the battle between good and evil.
Do you ever wonder why evil people seem to get away with so much? How about why good things always seem to happen to bad people and bad things happen to good people? Maybe it is because good people were once bad people, but had something good happen in their lives to make them change. Maybe bad people were once good people, but something bad happened in their lives to make them have a change of heart. Either way it goes, good people always seem to be the ones having the most trouble. Bad people seem to be the ones living good lives, having the best luck with their health, and have just about everything they want.
Although I can understand every aspect of Boethius" argument, I also agree with Philosophy.
