com, the belief that one race is superior to the others. Racism often leads to racial discrimination. Racial discrimination is the unlawful and immoral treatment of those based on differences among racial groups. Racial discrimination has been around since the foundation of this country. Since the days of slavery, African-Americans have been judged by the color of their skin. They have been referred to as the weaker race. Race is one of what we would call an ascribed characteristic. Ascribed characteristics are features that one is born with. Not one person in this world has the luck to be born into a race of their choice. Therefore, they should not be punished for things they have no control over. For years, many African-Americans have been subjected to living their lives without dignity because they were looked at differently due to their race and skin color. To help prevent this, people like W.E.B DuBois founded the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). When the NAACP was developed, many non-African-Americans screamed reverse racism. They believed that this was not an answer to the already increasing problem of racial discrimination. However, African-Americans needed a solution to help improve their already undignified lives, and a group devoted to do just that was exactly what they needed. One of the many causes of racial discrimination today is the media. Minorities are often portrayed in a stereotypical and negative light. They are often seen as the thugs and the gang members. The members of the NAACP did anything and everything in their power to get rid of this misrepresentation. As a result of the development of the NAACP, not only did African-Americans get the recognition that they deserved but the Hispanics and other "non-white" races did as well. Not only were they all able to rise up against the perils of racial discrimination, but they also lead the way for other minorities to rise up against the oppression.
