Imagine not having the right to marry the one person you love. There is much controversy in the United States about the legalization of homosexual marriages. According to a UFMCC article, currently, "Vermont is the only state in the United States that allows gay marriages to happen within the boundaries of their state" ("Gay Marriage Pro," 2003). A marriage is a relationship between two people. How does this union hurt society or the people not involved in the marriage? In this paper we will discuss the pros and cons of legalizing homosexual marriages as well as our personal opinion about this important issue.
In today's world, the majority of society opposes the legalization of gay marriage because of their religious beliefs (i.e. entering into the sacred bond of marriage with someone of the same sex). The Christian Bible greatly influenced our growing nation's proposed government. Although there have been many amendments and alterations done to our present government, our current laws reflect that influence and thus explain why gay marriage is illegal and widely unaccepted. "Many Americans do not want persons who openly engage in homosexual conduct as partners in their business, as scoutmasters for their children, as teachers in the children's schools, or as boarders in their home." Explained in a CNN article, some people view this as protecting themselves and their families from a lifestyle that they believe to be immoral and destructive ("Bush Uncertain About Gay Marriage Ban," 2003). Society has many fears about what gay marriages would do to the traditional values of the family and the future of the institution of marriage. .
Some people think if gay marriages are legalized, then this act of "immoral" behavior will start a chain reaction that will eventually destroy the idea of a sacred marriage. However, what is the definition of a sacred marriage? Why wouldn't a homosexual marriage be viewed as sacred? An internet research article states, "It makes biological sense for a man and a woman to marry because they can pro-create" ("Same Sex Marriages-Pros and Cons," 2004).
