The Christian Bible is made up of an Old and a New Testament. While followers of Christianity wrote the New Testament, the Jews wrote the Old Testament, which they called the Hebrew Bible. Even though Christians did not get along with Jews, and did not conform to all their beliefs, Christians did incorporate the Hebrew bible into the Christian Bible as the Old Testament. It explained many of the roots relating to the history, law, and philosophy of Christian beliefs. Christians reinterpreted many of the Jewish beliefs to create their own religion; therefore the Hebrew bible was essential to their followers. Christianity would have lacked the background knowledge for their religion if the Old Testament had been omitted. .
One teaching of the Jewish bible is the establishment of the covenant, which is the solemn & binding agreement between God and his followers. The covenant between God and his followers was essential to the religion of Judaism, and those who broke the covenant by living unjust lives would be punished and suffer unhappiness. Christians believed in this covenant just as Jews did. This covenant is illustrated in the 1st few books of the New Testament were Jesus, God's son, preaches to the people about God's kingdom and how God praises those who will follow his teachings of having a loving demeanor. Since the Old Testament was based on the covenant, to leave out the Old Testament in the teachings of Christianity would have been breaking the agreement with God.
The Jews also influenced and shared many other beliefs. They both believed in a single God that spoke to the followers. Jews of the Dispersion influenced Baptism custom used by Christians. Christians celebrate Easter that is patterned after Passover, celebration recognized by Jews. Both followers maintained a Sabbath day and public worship services. Among the similarities there were also differences, however the two religions still had a common heritage among them, the writings in the Hebrew bible.
