Lets picture what the world would be like if their were no God. Would there be morality or a sense of good or bad? If God did not exist, would anything matter? Could people just go around and do whatever pleased them with no worry of being wrong or right? Is morality based solely on the person judging it or is it by their surroundings? .
In The Stranger, Meursault is put to death because society believed he had committed a murder unjustly. According to their beliefs, they believed him to be immoral and evil. On the other hand, he believed his act as neither right or wrong, just simply an act. Who is the right one here and does he really deserve to be executed?.
I believe that morality is based on ones culture and beliefs. Based on your surroundings and how you were brought up distinguishes what you perceive to be right or wrong. One could look at morality in many different ways. By morally right, one obvious translation is what is simply approved by one's culture. So, morality is what is culturally approved. One views something as right, because they witness and are exposed to these right and wrong doings every day of their lives. Does this really make them right though? There is also the point that thousands of cultures exist, and whom is to distinguish the correct culture. In our culture murder is considered immoral and something forbidden to do, when in an entirely different culture in Africa it is considered simply part of their culture. Something they do, to transfer their grievances. In other cultures murder is permitted in a sense of punishment or redemption toward others. Since cultures disagree amongst themselves to which issues are right and wrong, who is actually considered right? Would this mean that there is no objective right and wrong? Ethical truth is relative from culture to culture, so, the only truth to you is that of your culture. .
There are cultures and then there are societies.
