             Gary Paulsen attended Thief River Falls High School and graduated in 1957. Even though Paulsen was a bad student, with mostly C's and D's, and he hated school, he had a favorite teacher. His favorite teacher taught social studies and according to Paulsen, he made "history come alive."" If it had not been for that teacher, Paulsen might have quit school and not become the great author that he is today.
             Paulsen spent much of his time at his grandmother's house. Paulsen felt that she was the only adult who cared about him. Even though his grandmother was able to comfort him somewhat, Paulsen ran away from home when he was fourteen, unable to handle his parents' drunken state anymore or deal with having to changing schools every five months. Paulsen then joined a traveling carnival and inherited a taste for adventure. Many of Paulsen's novels such as The Beet Fields (2000) and The Car (1994) tell of his experiences when he ran away.
             Even though Paulsen had a difficult childhood, he is now thankful for it. He says that because of his rough childhood, he learned to be persistent and independent. He is also grateful for his childhood because he had so many challenges and adventures, which he uses as the basis for many of his novels. .
             For his higher education, Paulsen attended Bemidji College from 1957 - 1958 and the University of Colorado in 1976. He paid for his tuition by working as a part time trapper while he was in college. Even though Paulsen did horribly in elementary and high school, he was very determined to do well in college.
             Gary Paulsen has been married three times during his lifetime. He had two children with his first wife. Paulsen married his third wife, Ruth Ellen Wright, on May 5, 1971, when he was thirty-one years old. Together, they had one son, James Wright. They currently live in La Luz New Mexico, and they own a boat on the Pacific. .
             Gary Paulsen's career has spanned many different jobs.
