" Orwell uses a third person narrative voice to tell what is going on, and occasionally writes from Winston's point of view through his journal that he keeps. The use of changing narratives is helpful to see Winston's thoughts and feelings. Orwell also uses large bolded statements to get a point across, for instance "WAR IS PEACE," is one of the ridiculous statements that the inner party wants the citizens to believe. The author also uses flashbacks to recall what the world used to be like for Winston. Although blurred images, Winston remembers chocolate from the past and how his mother used to give it to him. The author got his points across to me extremely well. I feel this way because he did a great job of creating these fantastic ideas like the "Thought Police," and he really made this believable by his descriptions. This book ties into Psychology because it deals with manipulation of the mind, which is represented by a power hungry inner party. This course deals with some kinds of depression and needs that people have, and the need for power is the connection with this book. The inner power gains its power by monitoring its citizen's every move through Tele-screens. They also monitor thoughts, and do not allow you to denounce Big Brother in any way shape or form, or you will be punished. Another connection with this course is the loss of memory that occurs in all of the citizens. The citizens are unable to remember anything before Big Brother. This is like when someone has a traumatic experience and loses memory from it (which is something we talked about in class with the woman in the car accident), only the situation in the novel is much less traumatic. Orwell is qualified to write this book because he has encountered a lot of political issues in his day, along with being in a war. He knows a lot about communism and does not agree with many of its principles, as he criticizes it through Animal Farm and 1984.
