             Will it be smoking or non-smoking? This is a familiar phrase, is it not? Unfortunately a common answer to this question is, smoking please. I am here in hopes that after today, all of your answers will be non-smoking. Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of death in the United States. It causes more than 440,000 deaths each year and results in an annual cost of more than $75 billion in direct medical costs, and for good reason.

             I. Researchers have identified more than 4,800 chemical compounds in tobacco smoke; of these, at least 69 cause cancer in humans and animals. .
             1. You might be surprised to know some of the chemicals found in cigarette smoke. They include but are not limited to:.
             a. Acetone - Nail Polish Remover .
             b. Butane - Lighter Fluid .
             c. Cadmium - Rechargeable Batteries .
             d. Napthalene - Mothballs .
             e. Nitrobenzene - Gasoline Additive .
             f. Stearic Acid - Candle Wax .
             g. Arsenic - Ant poison .
             h. Vinyl Chloride - Makes PVC (plastic pipe) .
             (Despite the fact that cigarettes contain all of these chemicals people still continue to smoke.).
             II. Did you know that, tobacco use accounts for about one-third of all cancer deaths in the United States. Smoking alone causes almost 90% of lung cancers. .
             1. Several other cancers have been linked with cigarette smoking as well. They are:.
             a. Cancers of the larynx (voice box).
             b. Cancers in the mouth, pharynx (throat), and esophagus.
             c. Smoking also contributes to the development of cancers of the bladder, pancreas, liver, uterine cervix, kidney, stomach, colon and rectum.
             (Not only does a cigarette affect the smokers themselves, but also the people around them. Secondhand smoke, also known as environmental tobacco smoke or ETS, is a combination of the smoke coming from the lit end of a cigarette plus the smoke exhaled by a person smoking.
