In 2002, a study conducted by the U. S. Department of Educations National Center for Education Statistics found that in 1999, 39 percent of all undergraduate students were 25 years old and older, up 28 percent from 1970. Further, more than one quarter of all undergraduates had dependents (typically children), according to the same study.
             "We live in a society where people are more and more likely to switch careers after 10 years," said Vicky Phillips, CEO of geteducated.com, a Vermont based clearinghouse for adult learners and the author of "Never Too Late to Learn: The Adult Student's Guide to College." The typical adult student profile is that of a woman who was interrupted by her personal life, usually when had children; helped her husband advance his career; or became and single parent and needed more income. Though women predominate, plenty of men go back as well; 45 percent of the total according to Phillips. .
             As adults, students want to be there and look forward to their time together in class. They understand the cost of an education better and have the desire to learn as much as they possibly can in their time at school. Often the adult student worries about finding the time to complete the work required and attend classes, but you find the time and then look back and wonder why you didn't do this before now.
             According to a report titled Learning Outcomes for the 21st Century: Report of a Community College Study, colleges have identified a wide range of knowledge and skills needed for the 21st Century: Communications skill; Critical thinking and problem solving; Technology literacy; Mathematics; Information management skills; Cultural; Humanities; Learning skills; Personal responsibility/management; and Creativity. If these skills are critical for success, employees will need more than high school diplomas to succeed. Not that they will be required to obtain a 4 year degree to do so, but some higher education will be necessary.
