"Can you imagine what would have happened if the system crashed?" Gillman says. This proves that people can not handle the freedom that technical business world has to offer. It just screams out that they need to be monitored so unethical issues like this do no occur more often.
In 2001 there was a survey done by informationweek.com asking 250 IT and business professionals about how their company monitors their employee's. Approximately 60% of them replied that their company monitors their web-site usage and phone usage, and approximately 52% monitor their website usage. This just proves that more and more companies do not believe that their employee's hold ethics in high regards to their employment. "Speaking for myself, I think employees' Web-usage logs should be available," says Dave Austin, human-resources IS specialist at manufacturer Leggett & Platt Inc. in Carthage, Mo. "If an employee is doing a poor job and the manager can see that person has visited eBay 85 times in the past week, the manager should be able to say that's not acceptable and must stop. And that should be explained to every employee up front." Now this is just about the companies that monitor their employee's. This brings us to the issue of companies selling customers private information after it is given to them through a purchase.
There are many consumers out there that have received phone calls from solicitors trying to sell them something. These consumers are always wondering how they had received their home phone or cell phone. In the same survey done by informationweek.com they asked the IT and business professionals what they do with a customers private information. It was found out that not all companies take customer data, that 80% of the companies collect customer data. Out of that 80% only 60% actually inform their customers that they do not sell their private information. Where as 6% of those surveyed actually say that their company will sell the customer's private data to a third party.
