Education and the Adult Learner

             Adult Learner 3.
in-services for the nurses in surgery so they can electronically document cases and procedures. Until I took this class these were presented much like the classes we had as children. I became interested in trying to approach these sessions as a facilitator instead of "spoon feeding" the information to the nurses. I will have to wait to see my ideas in action but will use The Adult Learner as a resource.
             Reflective Observations.
In looking back from the beginning of the class I feel the one thing that binds us as a group is the motivation we have to learn. Wlodowski (1985) suggests that there are four factors in the motivation of an adult to learn:.
             1. Success - we all want to be successful learners.
             2. Volition - we all want to feel that we have a choice in learning.
             3. Value - we need to feel that what we are learning is of value.
             4. Enjoyment- we want the learning experience to be enjoyable.
From the discussions we have had in relation to the text we have read I believe these four factors of motivation could easily apply in one way or another to all of us in the group. A motivation factor not mentioned but one that I feel is just as important to the group is the instructor/facilitator. It is apparent to me that the facilitator in our group incorporates these four factors in his presentation of the material. He has made us all feel that at some point in this class that we understand the course content, we have a choice in what we are learning, the content has some value to us as adult learners while also making a very difficult, dry subject somewhat enjoyable. It is my opinion that no matter how strong our motivation to learn, if the instructor/facilitator does not have the same motivation to teach then true .
             Adult Learning 4.
             learning will not take place.
In retrospect I can say that I have learned more about how to facilitate learning than how I learn.
