Fireworks

When compared with sales figures APA has found a 65% drop in the number of injuries per 100,000 pounds of fireworks used. For safety precautions the packages are issued a safety and sane seal. The seal means that the fireworks have been approved in that certain state. In truth, in 2000 an estimated 11,000 injuries were from fireworks (Injury in America). Likewise, in that same rating 44,098 people were injured by stove tops and ovens. Chimneys and fireplaces led to 26,831 injuries. Most injuries are from household appliances that we use everyday. When not used properly all appliances and certain household items can be a safety hazard. .
According to the U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission, the safest way to prevent injury from occurring is to leave fireworks display to trained professionals. Most injuries are due to irresponsibility of the person using the fireworks. Surely people must recognize who is getting hurt. Green states in 2002 that, "fifty percent of injuries are children under fourteen". Whether they are teenagers or young children they need adult supervision. In fact, children are eleven times more likely to be injured by fireworks if they are unsupervised. Injuries could be prevented if parents were more involved with what their children do. In deed you cannot follow them everywhere, but most accidents are at home and around holidays, particularly at New Years Eve and the Fourth of July. There are many things a parent can do to prevent injuries. First of all know what kind of fireworks the child is using. Five percent of injuries are from illegal fireworks, twenty-five from firecrackers, twenty-one from rockets, and eleven from sparklers. Parents also must realize that children are curious and lack physical coordination to light or use fireworks. Children might want to put them in a bottle or make homemade fireworks of their own. Supervision is especially needed when using lighters or matches and to insure that they are not held in hands.
