Mr. Antolini character sketch

He is very open and doesn't mislead people about the kind of person that he really is. Mr. Antolini gives really good advice to Holden about applying himself to his studies. He recognizes that Holden is a different person then most people, and he confirms Holden's suffering and confusion by suggesting that one day they may be worth writing about, which is exactly what Holden does as he explains his strange three days. One Strange quote that Mr. A gives Holden is "The mark of the immature man is that he wants to die nobly for a cause, while the mark of the mature man is that he wants to live humbly for one." He shows Holden that education is not as a path of conformity but as a means for Holden to find himself and to find the ideas that are most appropriate to him. This is a very unconventional approach and a reason why Holden likes Mr. Antolini. Mr. Antolini has stayed close to Holden's parents saying that he "Had lunch with Holden's father a couple of weeks ago." Mr. Antolini "was the only person who ever got close to James Castle.".
Mr. Antolini opens up Holden's eyes to accept all sorts of people even if they are different from Holden. The relevance that Holden gets from Mr. Antolini is the most evident towards the end of chapter 23 Mr. Antolini teaches Holden the greatest value that Holden probably learns in the book. He does something very strange when Mr. Antolini is rubbing Holden's forehead as he sleeps, this was most likely just a display of concern and affection because he genuinely cares for Holden. Since there is little evidence to suggest that he is making a sexual approach, as Holden first thinks, and it is very evident that Holden misinterprets his action as being something that is wrong. Holden earlier indicates in Chapter 19 that he is extremely nervous around "Flits" and that he worries about suddenly becoming one. In the life of Holden he recoils from a physical approach a couple of times in the story.
