Are They Alike Or Different?

             The story "The Red Convertible" written by Louise Erdrich's, and the story "Sonny's Blues" written by James Baldwin's are very much alike, but at the same time they very different. In both stories the main characters are two brother's that are faced with challenges in their life. At some point in each story the brothers separate and ultimately bond when the stronger brother accepts the weaker brother. Also in both stories the brother's delt with the separation of their sibling differently.
             In the story "The Red Convertible" the two brother's Henry and Lyman start out, as normal brothers should. They have fun and do things together. At one point in the story they hop in their red convertible that they bought together and take a road trip. On which they met a girl named Susy, who they gave a ride to Alaska. They stayed in Alaska that night and returned home the next day. As soon as they returned home the army recruited Henry. This is what changed the relationship between Henry and his brother. When Henry returned from Vietnam he was a changed man. Lyman described him as "being quiet, and never comfortable sitting still anywhere but always up and moving around". Since he had been back Henry didn't even look at the car he and his brother had bought together. One day when Henry was out somewhere Lymon took it upon him and banged the car up with a hammer. Which he did to bring his brother back .
             to reality. When Henry say the car he was disrupted by the way it looked. He couldn't stand looking at the car in that condition, so he took it upon himself to fix it up. When he finished fixing the car, he asked Lymon if he wanted to go for a ride. Lymon accepted his offer and they drove to the river. Where soon they began fighting because neither of them would take the car. The fighting soon turned into laughter. Soon after Henry shouts, "got to cool me off" and then jumps in the river.
