Alcoholism


Although families may resent this, it is rare that the learn how to avoid it. Family members often become fearful of the unpredictable consequences of drinking, the mood swings, anger, tension, and sometimes-even violence. They may fear the family will break up. As the disease place more unfair demands on the family, resentment and anger grows.
             Children who have had alcoholic parents often are hurt the most. They act impulsively, lie, and seek approval and attention from others. Due to guilt they may feel that they are the main cause of their parent's drinking. Anxiety can form while the child worries constantly about the situation at home or even fear that their parent will become injured, sick or the possibility of domestic violence. Aside from these personal conflicts there exist social problems such as the inability to form close relationships. Embarrassment is one of the barriers that prevent the forming of friendships. Parents may give the child the message that there is a terrible secret at home. The child feels ashamed and does not invite friends home and/or is afraid to ask anyone for help. A child who has been frequently disappointed by an alcoholic parent does not trust others enough to form close relationships. In addition to feelings of love and worth, children need to grow up with routines schedules. An alcoholic parent will change suddenly from being loving to angry, regardless of the child's behavior. A regular daily schedule, which is very important for a child, does not exist because bedtimes and mealtimes are constantly changing. . Finding what is "normal" tends to be hard because of the unpredictable environment they"re raised in. The results can be devastating. Spouses are more likely to face domestic violence. Children are more likely to develop psychological problems, suffer physical and sexual abuse and neglect. Defective parenting causes children to experience abnormal psychological development.
