Three Significant Poems

This is my life; I need to maintain control of everything in my power.
Abortion, have you ever had one? I've been asked that question several times. When I answer I never think about the children I killed. The next poem that I choose was "The Mother" by Gwendolyn Brooks. This poem gave me a new insight into the painful aspect of my life. This poem speaks of a woman who has aborted her unborn children. She goes through changes, wondering who or what her children would have been. She spoke of what they didn't get the chance to do. She expressed her guilt about what she did over and over again. I too had this procedure performed. Each time I made the decision to do it, when it was over I never thought of those children. When I read this poem it made me think of whom those people could have been. It made me wonder why I choose to have my three children but not the two I aborted. Up until now, I never yearned to hold those babies in m arms, kiss their lips and squeeze their tiny feet. I finally mourned the death of my children as if I knew them for years. It made me re-think what advice to give to friends that come to me for comfort about getting pregnant. I always pushed the issue of abortion if I knew a friend wasn't ready or if that friend said she wasn't ready. Thank God no one ever took my advice. I never thought of the innocent little baby growing inside of them. After reading this poem, saying those verses out loud: "The singers and workers that never handled the air", "you will never wind up the sucking-thumb- Experiencing those things with the children I have now, makes me wonder who those children would have become. Although I will not be having any other children, this poem made me reconsider abortion as an option to correct a so-called mistake. I will never offer that advice solely. Although abortion is an option, I will also offer my experience of guilt and sadness along with that quick fix.
