The impact that we had on the University community , was one in which we introduced the great things that our University has to offer to a vast population of Somalian high school students through this project which was appropriately named College Workshop. .
By implementing this kind of project, which had in every sense the protocols of a College Workshop, we had many University officials as well as activity groups that participated in exposing the University of Minnesota to these very impressionable students.
Our project was promoting diversity in our campus because we where showing many Somalian Students which in some sense would have never in other ways been exposed to the workings of actually getting to a big University like ours. In that way we were promoting diversity by showing a population that is in the present considered a minority on campus how to get to the University and someday may be become better acknowledged in number. .
Fortunately, there were many things that worked well in planning this project or it wouldn't have been as successful event as it has been. Some of these include, having many different personals come and participate in showing both angles of the University. By angles I mean as faculty and as students. Another aspect that worked well in planning this project was that we had many high school (in the Twin Cities and surrounding areas) that collaborated well with our organization to get this project to go.
There was only one thing that did not work well if anything. This was that when forming a student experience panel group we neglected to think through that we should have panelist that correlated with the interest of the high school students. Even though majority of the majors that our panels where pursuing where very interesting to the students. Nevertheless, as some students pointed out, there was some that we lacked to provide information on. This was mainly due to not having the resource to do an interest survey on the high school students that where taking part in this event.
