Five summers ago, our family seemed to have it all. My father had just completed his MBA. We were very settled into our home and community. Then, our family's infrastructure was violently shattered. May father suddenly passed away from a massive heart attack. After his death, the arduous task of raising a child as a single parent was given to my mother. A short time before my father's death unfortunate death, my grandmother passed away. Shortly after my father's death, my other grandmother passed away. These unexpected losses left my mother and me to cope. Through this devastating and challenging time, I have admired my mother. She has shown me the value of having a higher education, doing volunteer work, and have time to spare for other activities.
First, my mother has taught me the value of obtaining a college education. My mother works two jobs. These types of jobs she holds would not be possible without her college degrees. My mother's work ethic has been passed down to me. I have held a job since the age of thirteen. I am now working three jobs: the local country club as a bag room attendant, a sexton in the church, and a food runner and bus boy in a resturaunt. Without my mother pushing me to obtain a job, I would not have been able to purchase a car. She has taught me the value of working hard towards my own financial independence.
Secondly, my mother has taught me the importance of volunteering in the community. I have followed her advice in joining the Community Service Corps at Lansdale Catholic. In this volunteer group, I have gone on a cancer walk, the Keystone Hospice, and the Ronald McDonald House in Philadelphia. I really enjoy giving back to the community in my area. I would certainly continue the community service aspect.
Thirdly, my mother enjoys her free time in the community. She plays tennis at the local tennis club. She ahs taught me that you need to create and even balance for all your activities and schoolwork.
