Michael Jordan


Michael was able to contort his body in mind-boggling directions when dodging defenders to make his shots. Michael also displayed the ability to remain calm under pressure. (Shoulder 19) To this day his coaches still talk about a holiday tournament championship game that took place between Laney High and arch rival New Hanover. The first three-quarters of the game was a tug-of-war with both teams evenly matched. It was during the fourth quarter that Michael knew he had to step up his play in order to win the game. His unrelenting desire to win inspired him to steal the ball from the opposing players and make shot after beautiful shot. Amazingly, Michael scored the last 15 points for his team including the game winner in the final seconds. Michael had finally had proven to himself that he was capable of playing to the abilities that he was gifted with. (Shoulder 23-24).
             Michael Brown, the athletic director of Wilmington Country school systems, placed a phone call to Roy Williams, an assistant coach from the University of North Carolina and left him a message stating he had spotted "a high school player that was unbelievable, out of this world."" (Adams 15) Michael was quickly invited to attend a basketball camp held by legendary coach Dean Smith at the University of North Carolina. Every summer Smith's assistants would round up the best high school players they had seen in North Carolina to attend their camp and show their stuff. .
             Michael could not have been more excited about the camp; the best part to him was that he would not be going alone. Leroy Smith had been invited as well. Williams was very impressed with Jordan's ambition as well as his game. "Williams rushed over to another of Dean Smith's assistants and confided, I think that I've just looked at the best high school player that I've ever seen.- (Adams 16).
             Returning to Laney High School for his senior year, he led the Buccaneers to their first conference championship and finished second, behind good friend Buzz Peterson in the voting for North Carolina High School Player of the year.
