"A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings" tells a story about a winged man who falls in a fishing town where he is kept as a circus animal. The story describes the way he is treated, misjudged and sold until he is finally strong enough to fly away from what we can call hell.
The plot of the short story "A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings" revolves around the character of a winged man who has fallen to earth, but even though the story revolves around this character, the story's true focus is not on the angel, but on the people that get involved around this man. Throughout the story, Marquez gives his opinion about human nature, and how humans are illogical . They show ignorance and cruelty in their actions towards things that are different from what they are used to. " A very old man with enormous wings" is a criticism of the mentality of society towards the unknown.
From the story we don't know anything about the angel; we never discovered where is he coming from or what is he really doing. The only thing we know about him are his actions during the story and his physical description, and the reason for this is because nobody cares about the truth of the angel . In the story the character of the angel represents the unknown of the world and the treatment he gets from people demonstrates that the unknown is not accepted in society. .
Some of the characters like Pelayo, Gonzalo and the neighbor represent the different points of view of society; their opinions are really different from each other but they share the same incapacity to understand the angel. When Pelayo and his wife first interact with the angel they came to the conclusion that he was "a lonely castaway from a foreign ship" just because of the fact he didn't speak the same language. Then the neighbor came to take a look at the old man and she said "He's an angel", but the reason for the angel to be present there was because that " He must have been coming for the child" who was sick by the time the Angel showed up in the story.
