Pro con stadiums


            Over the last ten years there has been national debate for and against publicly funded sports stadiums shown by the people's rejection or acceptance of publicly funded sports facilities in. Different cities have different perspectives on the issue if sports stadiums should be publicly financed. You will see that voters can swing either way on the issue from a city like Seattle which got voter rejection of publicly financed stadiums, to a city like Arlington who approved a sales tax increase to fund there ball park.
             Cities can greatly benefit economically from building sports stadiums. Many believed that the ball park would be come a stimulant for economic development. Hotels and restaurants soon followed the ball park and even some real estate. The ball park generates more then one hundred million dollars of economic impact mostly from fans who live places other then Arlington. In 2001, Governor Jesse Ventura said that media tax should pay for the new baseball park. Because the media profits from professional sports Governor Jesse Ventura thinks that the media should be taxed, "Ventura suggested on his "Lunch with the Governor" radio show Friday that the news media, with whom he has been feuding win recent months, should be taxed for a stadium because they profit from professional sports." (Salisbury 1). The media does deserve to be taxed because the profit from professional sports. More people profit from professional sports stadiums then just the people directly involved in the stadium. The stadiums bring the growth of new business and opportunities, business owners and employees and there families all benefit from the stadium. Tourism is also a major issue with new sports centers. Tourism has a heavy impact on economic growth in the city because the money generated is coming from outside the city.
             Governor Jesse Ventura does not want a direct tax on the people for revenue, "Ventura opposes using any general stat tax revenue for professional sports stadiums, but his is open to tapping user fees to finance them, (Salisbury 1).
