In the essay "Bonehead" by Larry Terherst, the author illustrates that people should not judge others by their outer appearance because one never knows what that person carries inside. Terherst describes that his initial reaction to his student Bonehead was negative based on the student's criminal appearance. To the Author's surprise, this student was one of the most successful in his class. When Terherst presented Bonehead with his certificate of completion, Terherst was taken back by the comment Bonehead gave. Bonehead revealed that Terherst was the first person who ever told him that he did something right. That statement left a profound impact on the author that will affect his life forever. Terherst now wonders if Bonehead would be in his current situation had he received positive support from influential adults like educators throughout his life. I feel that praising a person for all good things he or she does can make a difference in that person's future.
My youngest brother, Greg, is now paying for the neglectful decisions my mother made regarding his life. He is a thirteen-year-old boy who has lacked the influence of a father as well as any consistent positive acknowledgement. I feel that if he had received some positive feedback in his life, he wouldn't behave the way he does today. I can remember Greg coming home with an A on his test that I helped him study for. I gave him a lot of praise for it. He was then eager to continue making these grades so that he could make our family proud of him again. Now that I have my own home and family to care for, I do not have the opportunity to study with him much. Unfortunately because of this, he rarely hears praise. He doesn't want to be in school and has no respect for adults. This is essentially a good kid who was robbed of essential needs from his parents and family. I know a positive influence would make a world of a difference in his life.
