Organized Crime: Spain Hunts for Madrid Bombers.
There is no generally accepted definition of organized crime yet, due mostly to the quick development and changing of the forms in which organized crime appears. Some characteristics of organized crime are high professionalism, organization and nearly unlimited financial means.
The article that I chose came from the Kalamazoo Gazette on Friday, March 19, 2004, which is entitled, "Spain hunts for Madrid Bombers." The bombings took place on March 11, 2004 in which 10 explosions occurred on commuter trains packed with people. The 10 backpack bombs exploded in a 15-minute time span started at about 7:39 a.m. .
This incident is a good example of organized crime. In this article, it talks about two groups of suspects in which they think are the doers of this crime. One suspect is the Basque Separatists, and the other is a group in the name of al-Qaida. The crime was organized and plotted as if professionals were doing it. They came out successful in their plot in which over 1,400 people were wounded along with over 198 people killed. Not knowing who the final blame is going to be put upon, Spain officials are looking at all evidence, including a claim of responsibility issued by al-Qaida.
Many people in Spain, along with all the television stations, spent three days in remembrance and mourning of the victims. Many people were afraid to ride the trains due to the terrorism following the explosions. This incident now holds its place in the history of infamy. .
