Death Penalty

This type of death is clearly not cruel because the state is offering the civil form of the most severe penalty, death. It is truly a continued debate regarding the effects of the eighth amendment on the death penalty. Legally the battle can sway either way; therefore, we look to other reasoning by both sides of the argument.
Having the public understand the punishment for such harsh acts as murder will deter society from making the same mistake. In many instances, such as when convict Gary Gilmore was put to death by a firing squad in Utah, crime rates dropped as much as twenty percent following such executions. The reduction appears to be merely from people understanding the consequences for their actions. Other areas have also seen similar occurrences. Arthur Bishop was executed and in the year following his death murder rates dropped an extensive nineteen percent. However, in order for this cause and effect to be the primary reason as the deterrent, we must ensure that we are putting the guilty to death.
The thought that killing someone is a method to deter others from committing such crimes is absurd. All it is showing is the hypocrisy of the government. They tell us that taking life is morally and legally wrong, yet they themselves are killing these people. People who are committing acts that are eligible for the death penalty are usually not in the right frame of mind to be critically analyzing the situation prior to the act. One judge in Texas, Myron Love, the presiding judge in the county responsible for over ten percent of the nation's capital punishment, states that he is not seeing the death penalty do its job to deter citizens from committing these heinous acts. It has failed to act as a deterrent from crime. This failure forces the issue of questioning why we use such a punishment that fails to discourage others from committing similar crimes. The death penalty can also be argued in response to economic evidence.
