Growing up, Hawkins was the typical resident of the area but he eventually became interested in astronomy. He had the time to absorb different perspectives of the Stonehenge through reading various forms of literature. Taking into consideration different beliefs and perspectives helped to open up different ideas and arguments to further improve his ideas. Besides simply keeping an open mind, Hawkins was also prepared with gizmos that would have been unheard of in a local's mind. For a man whose daily focus revolved around astronomical research, advanced tools were needed to further develop his research. Hawkins would now be seen challenging a scientific researcher's views.
Not many scientists had been interested in the Stonehenge at the time. Those scientists who had explored the Stonehenge prior to Hawkins had two major disadvantages. The first disadvantage was that just like the locals, they did not have advanced tools such as a compass, camera, watch, binocular, or astronomical tables. Hawkins" possession of such tools gave him the advantage in saving time, making more precise calculations, and being able to record his findings visually. However, the way Hawkins made some important scientific observations was done without all his "high-tech" equipment.
"Indeed, as I peered over and between the stones, I came to feel that all of them might have been placed according to some master plan their relative positions seemed so carefully arranged. It was as if the stones were posing questions which called out for answers like these: (Hawkins, 76).".
Equipment, or lack of it therefore could not have been much of an excuse. Hawkins was dedicated and well organized as he experimented. The second disadvantage of the prior scientists was that they had to build their ideas completely from scratch, thus giving their ideas a chance of having more errors and contradictions. Hawkins was able to start from original ideas as well as being able to correct and learn from another scientists" mistakes.
