In this essay "Don't Ignore the Arts," Harold M. Discusses the importance of art and how it affects our society. He explains that art has been ignored by many institutions and many students have little or no information of the importance of arts. Harold directs his questions to parents and educators when he asks, "If children are taught to look and understand what they see, isn't this a failure to prepare them for life in the contemporary society?" He believes that if we educate our students on the value of art, and don't ignore it, students will become much more educated, and to be educated is to be visual. I agree that art programs should not be ignored. In schools that have art programs, the children perform better than those without art programs because children are able to express themselves, their feelings and their dreams.
Harold begins his essay asking, "How difficult would society be without the arts?" Arts are a basic way of obtaining human development and self-esteem. In this essay the author explains to us how important art is to the development of human creativity. Based on tests by two similar schools, one where art is strong and one where art is weak, respectively; teachers attribute higher test scores in math, science, English, and reading in schools where art was a strong subject matter. In the same test that Williams talks about, there were reports that many of the students in the strong art based institutions, vocabulary and writing skills improved dramatically over non art based .
educational facilities. Later tests revealed that in multicultural schools, art such as different languages enhanced the minds of students. .
The author has a very strong argument about whether schools or institutions should have art programs. His test revealed eye-catching results, where students in art based schools performed much better than those of weak based art programs.
