If you were to take in to perspective all that we do in life then you would know that it is easy to say that life is an endless sea of obstacles that we must face under any circumstance. What I mean by saying that, is we change constantly and it is due to the things that take place on a daily basis that affects our characters as individuals. Now lets take Ralph's character into view, right from the beginning you can tell that he is somewhat able to take things into control. But by being on the island I think his personality definitely changes. Its almost as if he finally realizes why we have the need to be loved and taken care of by our parents. You see a lot went on between the children on the island that took away their innocence. And that loss is a major contributor to Ralph's character evolving. At first he thought it would be good to have time to be on his own with other people the same age. But he realized that a life without supervision was not at all as fun as he had imagined, it was actually dangerous and something that he was not quite prepared for. So I think he will be more independent now, just because of the fact that he has already lost his stage of innocence. Independence is the characteristic he would have, when leaving the ordeal of having to struggle on the island.
Another effect on his character I can think of is, he would be more cautious of what is around him and the type of people he involves himself with. And that's common sense because on the island, the loss of a friend, Piggy and the gain of an enemy Jack, most definitely will make Ralph consider a lot of things before actually allowing himself to trust anyone. It would be hard for him to not be paranoid because of the fact that he had to struggle to survive, people who one minute seemed to be his friend changed almost as easily as they became friends. So being cautious would be a characteristic I believe he would have picked up after leaving the island.
