Intro to Art

            One of many works of art that grabbed my attention from chapter nine is the statue of "Yakshi Holding a Fly Whisk." This life-sized work of art has an academic artistic style which is orderly and systematic. Its compositional lines that shape the breasts and pelvic area define female beauty and perfection. Her vertical posture represents strength and dominance of her kind, and she is a powerful figure in her time. Wearing ornaments and jewelry on her body may represent her wealth and importance to appear wealthy. The soft skin on her face continues to illustrate youth and beauty, with naturalistic details of her stomach lines and her massive breasts. This statue explains a lot about the time it was created in. This statue shows that female beauty is based on soft, smooth skin, large proportional breasts, and wide pelvic region. It also shows that women showed a lot of skin and decorated themselves with jewelry and minimal clothing. The artistic style of this statue consists of conceptual realism because of its perfection in the figure and appearance. This statue has decorations on her ankles, wrists, and ears. She also has pearls hanging down her neck and between her breasts that represent the perfect, firm curves of her body. The clothing on the statue is decorated with organic and calligraphic lines which demonstrate what was popular in terms of fashion. Her legs are parallel to her skirt like clothing, showing that the cloth is fit closely among her legs.
             Another figure that attracted my attention from chapter nine is the "Standing Buddha." Its 7"6" height represents a superhuman figure more powerful than any other person. This statue is scaled to such dimension because that is how the Buddha is viewed in the eyes of all the people. The massive shape of the body is visible through the cloth hanging over him. He is a massive figure with broad, square shoulders. This piece has a naturalistic view to it as you can see the belly formed through the cloth.
