Says Hip Online:.
As a vocalist, he (Dylan) broke down the notions that in order to perform, a singer .
had to have a conventionally good voice, thereby redefining the role of vocalist in .
popular music. As a musician, he sparked several genres of pop music, including electrified folk-rock and country-rock. And that just touches on the tip of his achievements. Dylan's force was evident during his height of popularity in the "60s - the Beatles" shift toward introspective songwriting in the mid-60's never would have happened without him - but his influence echoed throughout several subsequent generations. Though folk music is no where near as popular today as it once was, Bob Dylan still remains to his fans a man who became a hero of sorts with his open protests found in his music. To others he became a hero for the mere fact that, despite an annoyingly bad voice for singing, he reached musical stardom. .
After being in an accident and taking a break from music for awhile, Dylan later returned to show business only to find that music had changed to become heavier and artsy - it was becoming more and more popular to play less simple music and required more emotional content. Bands such as the Moody Blues and Led Zeppelin began playing with so much more heaviness and emotion. This trend in heaviness continues to this day, up to perhaps the most neurotic heavy metal band ever, System of a Down. An L.A. quartet, System proved with their first album that rock music had many more changes to undergo throughout its extensive future history. Says System's guitarist/songwriter, Daron Malakian: "We started this band to show people, "Look, not everything has been done before"" (SOAD). Like Bob Dylan before them, System of a Down has become a group of heroes to their fans merely for crossing a boundary that no one would cross. Like Hercules of ancient myth, these men used their special abilities/talents to stretch the boundaries of life to new levels.
