The Knowledge Gap

They represent a new kind of learning community where young people and adult mentors work together on projects, using technology to explore and experiment in new ways.
With the help of government and private sectors, our youths of today have organizations that can assist them with the many problems of growing up in an urban environment. One of these organizations is the Madison Square Boys & Girls Club of New York City. This clubhouse is catered to children from the ages of six to eighteen.
I had the opportunity of interviewing several club and staff members at the Genesis Homes Boys & Girls Clubhouse located in the East New York section of Brooklyn. First I interviewed Ms. Parker, the Recreation Program Manager. She informed me that at the Boys & Girls Clubhouse their first duty is to work with the members on improving their education. They offer them homework assistant, computer lab experience, and tutoring; specializing in reading and mathematics. The members are given awards for progressing in these areas. The educational staff promotes reading and math by playing games, i.e. Bingo Math, Spelling Bees, etc. "When we first got the donations of computers, the club members were very excited and eager to learn how to operate them." "In order to teach the members how to operate the computers I had to take a beginners course myself. I was glad to do this because now I have a knowledge of computers and can better work with the youth.".
I then interviewed two club members; Stephanie - age 14 and Rashawn - age 17. Stephanie has been a member from the age of 9. She said that if it weren't for the Boys & Girls Club she would be in the streets after school and during the summer hours probably getting into all kinds of trouble. She enjoys learning how to operate the computers and wants to go to college to study computer programming. Her family can't afford to buy a computer and is very glad that the Boys & Girls club has computers that she can work on.
