I let him drown. I was angry. You know how when you get angry you don't think? That's no t a sin- he drowned- I thought he was joking- why do I feel it's a sin? If I can get to the fourth church-" (page15). The patient doesn't seem to care about the act he or she committed and the individuals try to justify their sins by claming it was anger not a sin. The patient isn't concerned about the sin committed; she/he just wants to be free from any sin. The patient goes on to further express their sin by saying, "I let my baby die-I have to be forgiven-I couldn't take care of it - I Didn't mean to starve it" (page 15). This further enhances the sinner's motives of only caring about his or herself and having no remorse. According to the prophecy of the four churches, a sinner must have to have repent and have sincere remorse for their actions in order to be exonerated by God (page17-18). The impious pilgrims will stop at nothing to reach their precious four churches. For example, A Grizzled Pilgrims exclaims: "I stole money to come to Rome so God would forgive my sins. Why would God put me in a bus crash before I got to the forth church?"(Page 20). This pilgrim is so delusional and so caught up in the concept of the four churches that he contradicts even the 10 commandments in order to reach his "paradise." The pilgrim doesn't even bother to think that these actions were wrong; ironically he condemns God for putting him in a crash. The absurd actions of many of these pilgrims symbolize the false misconceptions of Catholics and their negligence to accept their sins. .
Father Shapiro, the Catholic Priest and representative of the Vatican, is the antithesis of a stereotypical priest. Father Shapiro doesn't not represent what one would perceive to be a typical Catholic priest. He is characterized as being unsympathetic, politically motivated, and anti-Catholic. For example, Father Shapiro uses Yiddish words such as tsurris and uses Gods name in vain, a violation of the Ten Commandments.
