Recently I watched a fascinating movie which related psychology and experimental drug usage. The movie was quite long, and had a variety of high points and low points. A few main aspects were touched on and could be related directly to my class and the information we have covered over the past few weeks. It would crucial to summarize the movie first and then compare and contrast it to the information I have been presented with in my psychology class. .
Imagine your life being seemingly normal one day, and the next day changed forever. Dr. Sayer was a research psychologist who studied the cause or result of behaviors based on experimental data. He applied at an institute to work as a neurologist. He was told that his professional skills could be used elsewhere because the neurological ward lacked instruments and was not used often. Dr. Sayer was a very quiet man who didn't respond well with other people. He preferred to sit back and watch, rather then get out there and help. He had been working with a lady named Lucy for a few weeks, she was un-conscience, but had unbelievable reflexes. .
As Dr. Sayer worked with these patients he felt that a drug used on Parkinson's disease might make a difference in these comatose patients. Leanord's mother was the first to allow the doctor to experiment on her son for medical research and possibly a cure to his disease. Medicine called Eldopa was given to him daily in orange juice, when there was no change in his state of mind, it was assumed the acid in the orange juice may have been counteracting the medicine. Therefore, it was tried again in milk, and large amounts, such as 1200mg were given to Leonard. Leonard woke up and was completely confused with the world around him. He slowly learned how to do simple things which were unfamiliar to him. His story was used to make a show in order to encourage families to give money to help their loved ones come back alive as well.
