             The theory of Expectancy Violations is one that most people can relate to. If you've ever had the feeling that someone is too "close for comfort" or too far to even acknowledge then you know this theory well already. In American Beauty there are a few examples of when people get to close and break their invisible barrier. One scene of this is when Jane's friend goes into the kitchen to flirt with her dad. She starts the small talk and then she reaches up for his shoulder. The cinematics of the movie give it great feeling, it makes you feel as though this was a turning point in this man's life. All of this drama because of one plain touch that broke his comfort zone. This simple touch, to Lester, was the fire that lit his candle of lust which was burning for her. Another scene that shows proof of expectancy violations is the scene when Ricky's dad comes into Lester's garage and tries to kiss him. You can see by Lester's face that even when the man starts to cry, Lester already was showing signs of discomfort. Then to put the icing on the expectancy violation cake, he shoves his lips up to Lester's to try for the kiss. Lester's barrier being broken, tells the man that he had the wrong idea. This is one of the best examples of any of the theories that were discussed so far in this movie. Now, to move on to some of the bigger aspects of the movie. .
             One thing that really caught my mind was that all of the characters in this movie interpreted success in extremely different ways.
