Mexican american war

.
In order to explain the confusion that surrounds the war what needs to be examined is the internal events in each of the countries involved. As it is very clear that it was not one thing and one thing alone that started this war, but it was a series of events that perpetuated hostilities between the nations and ultimately ending in war.
             .
One part of Mexico's inability to rule its territory was the effect that the movement for independence had on the country as a whole. The Mexican struggle for independence began around 1808 as an upper class uprising of the Criollos and Spaniards. Although this uprising was violently put down by the Spanish forces a Creole priest Miguel Hidalgo continued to lead the unrest. This movement was also curbed but it sparked a more general following and was lead by Agustin de Itrurbide, who was able to bridge the gap between the centralists and the federalists. The struggle between the Spanish royal army and the revolutionaries in Mexico was a long bloody battle, but finally in 1821 the Spanish troops were ordered home, and Mexico claimed its hard-earned independence. Once the struggle for independence was reached in 1821 Mexico was left an economic mess. Vazquez and Meyer explain "The constant outflow of money since 1804 had impoverished the country" . This was not Mexico's only problem, Mexico did shed the political dependence of Spain, but this did not quench their desire for the liberties they yearned for. "From a political dependence on Spain, Mexico advanced only to an economic dependence on the new imperialists." . This guidance from the US came with apprehension. Although Mexico did look to the US for a constitution and a new political framework, they also knew of the US desires to occupy their land and fulfill the prophecies of "Manifest Destiny". .
Besides the impact that the US now had on Mexico there was more serious internal problem ensuing. The 12-year struggle for independence had left the country in a state of agony.
