The tragedy of World War I took the lives of millions away from the world. The ones left after the war were force to deal with the repercussions of battle. The story of Harold Krebs is a prime example of a young man whose life is ruined simply because of his desire to defend his country. The war causes Krebs to change from an outgoing young boy to a harsh, bitter man who loses all faith in his world. The pre and post-war settings in Ernest Hemmingway's Solder's Home depicts how World War I changes Harold Krebs's world from a caring, hopeful future to a cold and lonely life and causes him to lose all faith in work, women, family, and even God.
The beginning of the story takes an antecedent view of Harold Krebs before he had enlisted in the Marines. He is an average young man just like his friends. The story describes a picture of his fraternity brothers and himself and, "all of them [are] wearing exactly the same height and style collar" (Hemmingway 152). His overall personality complies with the way others think he should be. After he leaves college, Krebs enlists in the Marines and is sent into World War I. When he returns home in 1919, his view of the world has completely changed. Krebs does not receive a flamboyant welcome like the soldiers before him. He comes home to a town where "the greeting of heroes was over" (153). This is tolerable to Krebs simply because, in his mind, the war has not ended nor will it ever end. Krebs has no desire to talk about his war stories to the townspeople, and even when he wants to, "no one want[s] to hear about it" (153). Besides, Harold's stories are not filled with the pretentious lies like his colleague's stories; therefore, his purpose in the war, in the minds of others, seems meaningless. These thoughtless attitudes from the townspeople lead Krebs to become an idle hermit who does not feel the need to change or grow up anymore.
The war does not only change Krebs personality, it causes him to avoid complex situations in life, especially in dealing with women and work.
