Cuba

Cuba is an island between the North Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. Cuban history dates back to the voyages of Christopher Columbus. This Spanish speaking country has a limited amount of religions that are practiced within its borders. From the rule of the Spanish to the beginning of the Communist reign of Fidel Castro, Cuba has been a country full of conflict and problems.
Christopher Columbus landed on the island of Cuba in 1492, on his first trip across the Atlantic Ocean. Columbus first named the land he found after the Spanish ruler's daughter Juana. After many names, conflicts and different rulers it became known as Cuba, from its aboriginal name, Cubanascnan. Cuba was then colonized by Spain, which remained in power until 1898. The United States put troops in Cuba in 1906 and was in control until Fidel Castro led rebel forces to victory over the United States in 1959. Thus begins the rule of the tough communist government of Cuba. In the early 1960's the United States placed a trade embargo on Cuba slowing down drastically all trade with the United States, one of the sources of there income to the country (www.emayzine.com).
Cuba has always been notably an Atheist, the belief in no god, country since the beginning of Fidel Castro's reign in 1959. This remained this way until the early nineteen nineties when religious people in Cuba were allowed to join the communist party. Now, the people of Cuba have somewhat of a religious freedom and the ability to have power in politics. The main religion in Cuba is always Roman Catholicism, Jehovah's Witnesses, Jews, and Protestants are also represented in the country (www.cia.gov). The religious battle has always been tough in Cuba. Religious freedom should be allowed in every country, even the communist countries. Many people rely on religion to get them through life and should be allowed to practice it when and where the want to.
Cuba is the largest island of the West Indies, lying south of Florida and east of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula.
