There once was a time in American history when the thought of women working for complex, multi-national technology companies, giant advertising firms, and massive publishing houses was snickered at behind closed doors. Today, women are running those companies "from some of those very same closed doors. But although women make up almost half of America's labor force, still only two Fortune 500 companies have women CEOs or presidents, and 90 of those 500 companies don't have any women corporate officers. So why are women being valued less in the corporate world? Why are women being paid less for the same jobs? Why is there a perception about women not being able to have a family and also a career? Why are there only 2% of women in higher level jobs? Everyone, male or female, should be treated fairly in the workplace by considering their salary, family responsibility, and their value in the work place equally.
What is the point for women to go to work and get paid less then men when doing the same job? Statistics have shown that women are being paid less then men. Women work as hard as men do when doing some of the same jobs, yet we get paid less. In a recent news release it stated that "Women who work full-time are still earning on average $8.98 an hour, compared to $11.00 for men- (Equal Opportunities Commission). This is totally unfair for women, especially when there are laws against this, like the Equal Pay Act of 1963 which states "To prohibit discrimination on account of sex in the payment of wages by employers engaged in commerce or in the production of goods for commerce- (website). .
So why are employers still not paying the women the same as men? Women have been fighting for equal pay, equal jobs, for many years without success. A day has now been designated called the Equal Pay Day which was on April 15th of this year. Participating women wear red, showing their frustration on not being paid the same as men for the same types of jobs.
