Charlie starts to become downhearted when the mouse beats him every time. So the two psychologists that have been testing Charlie decide to perform the operation on Charlie due to his discontent. However, at this point, they don't even know if the surgery works to perfection or the side effects or consequences of it. Algernon was their first test study, and he was not yet done with all of his evaluations. .
Dr. Strauss wanted to perform the operation on Charlie, however, Dr. Nemur knew it may not be a good idea to rush into it, and tried to persuade Dr. Strauss not to go ahead with the surgery. He even states, "Remember he will be the first human being to ever have his intelligence tripled by surgical means"(Daniel Keys, 608). Dr. Strauss then proceeded to tell Dr. Nemur how well Charlie had learned so far and that Charlie had great determination to further learn more. With this being said, Dr. Nemur gave in, and the two both decided to go on with the surgery.
The surgery was completed and ended up being, what Dr. Strauss and Dr. Nemur thought, as a success. Over time Charlie became more intelligent just as did Algernon. He began to study many things and figures out a great deal of information that he had not known when he was retarded. He also realizes though, that his surgery was performed too quickly, and that the doctors did not know everything that they should have before going through with the operation on him. He also figured out that Algernon was gradually becoming less intelligent and knows that he too will travel down the same path. He noticed that he will have to live again as a mentally retarded person, but not after experiencing what it was like to be as smart or smarter than most people.
Charlie was able to realize all of this because two doctors/scientists rushed into an operation that they had very little understanding of in order to become recognized for all their advancements.
