Surviving Columbus

The beginning of White-Indian relations began with Columbus" discovery of the "New World." Columbus" marvelous discovery created an open invitation for all nations to come forth and try to take a piece of this "New World," within fifty years, the Spanish had invaded down into Mexico and South America taking advantage of their ruthless conquistadors. This papers intent is to describe a few interactions between the Spanish and the Pueblo people and to further reflect on how these interactions affected the relationship between these two very contrasting civilizations.
The Pueblo people were a large tribe that lived in compact, apartment-like villages of stone or adobe in modern day New Mexico and Arizona. The first Europeans to enter their land were Spanish adventurers motivated by rumors of indigenous cities of fabulous wealth, the so-called Seven Cities of Gold. The fist to go searching was Fray Marcos de Niza who brought back tales of these marvelous cities. After hearing these tales Francisco Vasquez de Coronado journeyed into the land of the Pueblo people. Coronado's journey to locate the fabled cities of gold much resembled the intent of numerous conquistadors before him. Whenever a village refused to provide him with food and blankets, he would attack the town and kill all of the individuals whom lived inside. It was this arrogance and greed that would cause the Pueblo people to come to fear these light skinned conquerors. However, what Coronado encountered, instead of cites of spectacular wealth, were the Pueblo people, living in their apartment-like dwellings. After his attempt and failure to find any gold he returned, to his home base.
However this motion would not be the last that the Pueblo people would see of the Spaniards. Shortly thereafter, Spanish settlers and missionaries would come to occupy the Pueblo's territory. Later, it would be the missionary's efforts to try and convert the Pueblo people away from their traditional methods in order to adopt Christian views.
