Nuclear Proliferation

With the use of the atomic bomb on the Japanese at the end of WWII our world has been plagued with the threat of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD.) Only now in 2003, the threats are much greater and the countries with the technology are not only our allies but now our enemies as well. Chemical weapons, Biological weapons, Nuclear weapons even air planes are being used to kill people on the other side of the earth, our neighbors and even the citizens of our own countries. Despite efforts to deter the threats they have only become more real to us, the only way to ease this threat is to stop it at the source. The proliferation of WMD should strictly monitor and limit, through a revised version of the Non-Proliferation treaty (NPT). The NPT should be re-written to include all types of WMD (Which would include the text of both the Chemical Weapons Convention [CWC] and Biological Weapons Convention [BWC]) and provide harsh consequences if it is not strictly followed. .
The NPT is a treaty that was written to "prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and technology, to promote co-operation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy-(UN Department of Affairs). When the treaty was written nuclear weapons was the threat most governments were worried about. It was opened for signatures in 1968 and since then has been signed and ratified by 188 countries through out the world, which is more than any other disarmament agreement in history. The ultimate goals of this treaty were, to encourage disarmament of all nuclear weapons, to halt the production of fiscal material, and to slow the advancement in nuclear technology. .
In many ways the NPT accomplished its goals. Some people would argue that it helped to easy the tensions of the cold war and kept many countries from the edge, in current affairs. It has brought together 188 countries and has enlightened many officials on the dangers of Nuclear weapons.
