Psychology of nuclear weapons


Yet the intensity of the bombs caused survivors to remain locked in a numbed state defeating any temporary usefulness that numbing may have offered. Because of all the death and destruction survivors experienced, a paralysis of the mind leading to the incapacity to feel, occurred. They have no idea of what is going on or how to relate events to themselves. Survivors were technically separated from the mind and body. They were unable to return to earlier modes of response such as love, pain, pleasure, loss or any other human emotion (3). They become so numb that normal emotion and moral consideration cannot penetrate them anymore (4). Numbing closes off a person and leads to ungraspable issues such as death. To them death begins to turn into an abstract issue. They have no idea of what is going on or how to relate events to themselves. The impact of nuclear weapons not only killed millions, completely obliterated mass cities but also left thousands of survivors numbed to life. The survivors may improve their numbed state with lots of help however life will never again be normal as a sense of desensitisation towards life grows in their hearts.
             As a culture, nuclear weapons have not desensitisation us, yet have brought us closer .

             together as the majority believes in nuclear deterrence for the future. To stop the terror of Nagasaki or Hiroshima of occurring in North American many Americans believe the only way to solve nuclear war is by deterrence. As a culture we have witnessed the deviation of nuclear weapons and want to protect ourselves from them. So we spend trillions to build weapons that can destroy the world many times over. Many believe that because nuclear technology has been unleashed into the world, the only choice we have is to stockpile. The only way to be secure is to make your enemy insecure. However it comes to the point where actions considered protective are perceived as indication of aggressive intentions and plans to attack (5).
