Happiness, sadness, and depression

.
Depression has been detected ever since Biblical times. According to the Greek physician, Hippocrates, depression was defined as "melancholia", meaning a "mental disorder involving a prolonged period of fear and despair" (Elanor, 32). During the middle ages, religious leaders believed that depression was a result of the devil. The people who possessed these so-called "evil spirits" were tortured and executed. It wasn't until the late 19th to early 20th centuries that physicians had a more scientific view of depression. Sigmund Freud and Joseph Breuer discovered that depression was not a demon force nor abnormality of some sort. .
Another very common form of depression is known as bipolar disorder or "manic-depressive illness"; here a person experiences extreme forms of mood swings; involving a period of hopelessness alternating with a period of extreme excitement. About one in every one hundred people suffer from manic depression, usually beginning during adolescence and in most cases develops before the age of 35 (Dianne and Snyder, 40). Those suffering from mania find that their mind races uncontrollably with thoughts. This individual would speak at a rapid pace; talking about numerous things all at once, they .

A manic-depressive person experiences desires to be sociable and very conspicuous. He/she goes through a stage of hallucinations, for instance, they might think that they are Napoleon or Shakespeare and they would try to mimic their behaviors. During a manic episode, a person is unbearable to be next to; they irritate people around them to the point where they would leave the person. Bipolar disorder tends to run in families, more than 2/3 of people with the illness have at least one close relative who has experienced "a bipolar episode" (http://www.psychologyinfo.
