Happiness, sadness, and depression


            Why has the pursuit for happiness left us feeling more vulnerable and discouraged? In today's society, we are faced with many unpredictable and stressful situations. However, many of us manage to properly analyze these situations and maintain our "sanity". Most scientists have referred to depression as "the common cold of the mental health problems" (http://www.depression-information.net/depression-tests.htm). Depression, also referred to as mood disorder, loosely defined is a state of illness where a person experiences deep sadness and hopelessness, which can be associated with fatigue and low self-worth in nearly all their daily activities (Bourne and Russo, 24). Depression affects people all around the world and takes over many lives. Many of us experience depression because of certain unfortunate situations that occur in day-to-day living. There are many reasons why people get depressed, such as, a death of a family member, parents divorce, loss of a job, prolonged chronic illness, or general stresses. The following will be discussed about depression: definition, causes, symptoms, types, and treatment. .
             Everyone feels sad or upset from time to time; according to the American Psychological Association (APA), over 18 million people experience such feelings. Depression can take several forms. Imagine someone who is so distraught and confused that they would want to injure themselves as well as others around them. Such feelings .
             are termed as Severe Depression. Severe Depression is the most common form of depression; it's a mood disorder that's described by persistent feelings of unhappiness, worthlessness, and hopelessness (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 7). Individuals who suffer from this form of depression are overwhelmingly sad, and they might cry for no apparent reason. Depression is a physical illness; symptoms of it include problems with eating. This can mean eating too much or too little, and sleep deprivation.
