The Chocolate War themes

Many different themes are expressed in the novel The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier. The two themes that are most prevalent in this novel are god versus evil and courage. The main character Jerry Rennault is completely involved with these themes.
One theme that is very prevalent is good versus evil. Good versus evil is shown throughout the entire novel but is mostly expressed towards the end. When Jerry and Janza have to fight at the end of the novel things do not turn out to well for Jerry. In this case Janza beats up Jerry and evil has triumphed over good. Another example of good versus evil is when Brother Leon accuses Bailey of cheating on a test. Bailey didn't cheat and earned that grade but Brother Leon just kept going on and on saying he was a cheater but son knew that he definitely did not cheat. In this case good triumphs over evil.

Jerry is actually standing up for himself against the school and more importantly The Vigils. Bailey also shows courage in the novel when he stands up for himself while Brother Leon was accusing him of cheating. They both stood up for themselves showing real courage. .
Good versus evil and courage are only some of the themes expressed in this novel. Although Jerry had to face some consequences for his actions he still stood for what he believes in. .
